FOLLOWING CHRIST

And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” – Luke 9:23 (ESV) The word DISCIPLE means a learner, as a new disciple of Christ you’ve begun a lifelong journey of learning to follow Jesus daily. You mentor’s role is to help you follow Jesus. The following lessons will help you start right in following Christ.

1. The Gospel – TRUST Jesus alone for your salvation (and fully understand the gospel message)

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. – Ephesians 2:8-9 (ESV)

2. Prayer – TALK to God daily through prayer, speak to Him from your heart with faith and confidence

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. – Hebrews 4:16 (ESV)

3. God’s Word – TAKE  IN God’s Word daily by reading the Bible and obeying what the Lord reveals to you

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it … – Joshua 1:8 (ESV)

4. Confession – TURN AWAY from what the Bible calls sin

But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.” – 2 Timothy 2:19 (ESV)

5. Church – TEAM UP with other believers by attending Sunday worship and fellowship, connecting with a mentor, joining a LifeGroup, and serving through a ministry

not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. – Hebrews 10:25 (ESV)

6. Testimony – TELL OTHERS  what the Lord has done in your life and what you know of Christ

And he did not permit him but said to him, “Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled. – Mark 5:19-20 (ESV)

7. Trials – TRUST God in the midst of trials

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. – James 1:2-4 (ESV)

8. Holy Spirit – TUNE IN  to the Holy Spirit each moment, and live each day in step with him

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. – Romans 8:14 (ESV)

In obedience to Christ’s command: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  teaching them to observe (obey) all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”  Matthew 28:19-20  (ESV)
