The Living Water

37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given because Jesus was not yet glorified. – John 7:37-39

I always wondered what Jesus meant by “drink” and “living water”. In the following passages, we find out that water is the WORD of GOD.

2 but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law (God’s Word) he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. – Psalm 1:2-3

that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word – Ephesians 5:26

Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. – John 15:3

The last passage says – like water which washed and cleanses, our lives are washed and cleansed by the Word of God.

Jesus’ invitation to “come to me and drink” is an invitation to listen and understand His teaching, His commands, His promises, and His Word. Whoever believes His Word, believes in Him – the Holy Spirit will be sent into his heart. The presence of the Holy Spirit in the person’s life, he/she …

  • will know God’s Word

  • will understand God’s Word

  • will speak God’s Word

  • will be set free by God’s Word

  • will be transformed by God’s Word

God’s Word within that person will be like “rivers of living water” flowing out of his heart, flowing out to others as well as he speaks God’s Word.

When you share your faith, when you teach God’s Word – streams of water flow out of you because of the Holy Spirit in you.
